President’s Message
The Garvey boat
races took place in Barnegat on Aug 15th. I guess, due to the distance, only
5 club cars attended. These flat-bottom boats are miniature rockets with what
appears not too much stability. They look like they could easily get out of
control with not too much time to recover if a mistake is made. The announcer
was saying that these boats go as fast as 70 mph on the straights. It would
have been nicer if the boats could run a little bit closer to shore, but I’m
sure they have a set of rules and restrictions to follow.
I’m not sure if
any of our members made the trip to Spearfish, S.D. to attend the National Impala
Association Convention, but next year, I’ll be putting it on my radar. The sites
to be seen are nothing short of spectacular, exciting and full of history. In
South Dakota alone, just a few of the sights are the Blackhills, the Badlands,
Mount Rushmore and Deadwood. If you’re interested in Old West history, then
Deadwood is a ‘must stop’. This town is no more than twenty miles from Spearfish.
Stop there on your way out of Spearfish not only for the history but for the
Kool Deadwood Nights car show, which runs Thursday to Sunday. If you would be
driving and attempting to make an 1800 mile bonsai run to Spearfish, then you
would be better off flying, as there’s so much to see. You could cut 600 miles
by starting with the Woodward Ave Cruise in Detroit. Is there a better way to
see the U.S.A. than in your Chevrolet? Think about it!
Also, the September
12th club meeting will be held at the Bordentown Community Center at 5pm. One
of the topics that will be discussed is the 2011 calendar. This is something
we like to have finalized by year-end which helps families plan their summers
in advance. If you have an activity or a week-end road trip in mind, please
attend the meeting to share your thoughts.
