President’s Message
The Fall Foliage Train Ride through the Lehigh Gorge took
place on Sept 18-19. The weather cooperated this year. If you remember last
year IT SNOWED!!! A group of Jersey Late Greats Members met at the Jim Thorp
Train Station at 10:30 and boarded the train at 11:00. In attendance were the
Thackeray Families (ALL Three), Lucas Family and Alex, and new Members Angelo
& Clair Delmonte.
The train ride through Lehigh Gorge was beautiful and interesting. One of the
Conductors narrated the local history of the rail road and the town of Jim Thorp.
The town is rich in history. After the ride, the group stopped for lunch and
then headed to the Ekley Mine Village. On the way they were detoured because
of a hill climb competition. Jim & Karen Thackeray got them back on track
with their GPS. Later that day, they saw some of the sports cars that competed
in the hill climb, and drove down the course they used for the competition.
John Lucas’s 58 Impala made it down the course, and around the hair pin curves,
but could never compete with the sports cars the “real racers” drove. The Mine
Village provided a look back in time to the hardships of mine workers and their
families back in the late 1800’s. The houses still stand, and some are still
occupied! The coal breaker still stood, however was blocked off because much
of it had fallen down and was probably not safe. Some of the houses had been
renovated years ago for the Movie “The Molly Maguires”, which was filmed on
site at Ekley’s.
After touring the Ekley Mine Village the group headed to Roadies Restaurant
at Penn’s Peak and enjoyed more socializing while overlooking a fantastic view
of the Pocono Mountains.
This was the first Jersey Late Greats event for Angelo and Clair Delmonti. John
Lucas said it was great to meet such a nice couple. They have a beige 1964 four
door. Thanks for joining the group this time out, and we hope to see you at
another event soon. Thanks also Lou DiPietro for coordinating this event.
Our first meeting after the summer recess took place on September 12. First
and foremost, a new member attended, Phil Italiano who owns a ’62 Sport Coupe.
Welcome Phil and hopefully we’ll see you at future events. Some of the items
discussed were the length of time a classified ad will run. Verne reiterated
the policy, which is that an ad will run for 3 months after which time the Ad
editor Tom Merring will remove the ad unless you contact him to extend the ad
for another 3 months.
The Christmas Dinner will be on December 12 and we’re starting to plan now.
At the next meeting, Dawn Dennery will be handing out a sign-up sheet to the
membership for everyone to bring a dish. If you can’t attend the next meeting
and wish to bring a dish, please call Dawn.
We have a list of 2011 events with tentative dates, but it’s not yet complete.
If you have an idea about any car related event that may be of interest, please
share it before the calendar fills up. If you think of an event, it doesn’t
mean that you are now the coordinator of that event, unless of course you’d
like to be, so don’t be bashful.
During the October meeting, Mike Berry will be holding nominations for the 2011
Officer positions. Speaking of Mike Berry, please be sure to check out the neat
Photo Pages from the Garvey Boat Races later in this newsletter, Thanks Mike
!!! Also, the November meeting date has been changed from the 14th to the 7th.
