President’s Message
The weather forecast predicted possible early showers but
not a drop fell on our annual picnic that was held on May 8th. We invited other
clubs to participate and a few members from the NJACE and the Jersey Cruisin
Classics did attend. Al Bernotas, the club chef was manning the grill, not with
his special Dennery Grilling Hat but with another hat that resembled a platypus’
bill. Nice hat Al !!! Thanks to Gerry and Lew Thackeray who took care of all
the food shopping and Steve Calandra who once again, provided the music.
Verne Frantz presided over the 2 car games. The first being the “Go and Whoa”
in which the driver had to idle a short distance in a straight line, judge the
distance and stop his car closest to the finish line. He/She did this with a
paper bag over their head and with no help from the audience. Verne handed out
car care products and gift certificates to the first, second and third place
winners, who were:
1. Tom Merring
2. Larry Jehle’s daughter Jessica, from the Jersey Crusin Classics
3. Karen Thackeray.
The second game, “Turn Your Partner” is a timed event in which the driver has
to perform a series of turns both driving forwards and backwards through cones.
The driver receives his/her directions from their co-pilot walking alongside
the car. This one can be slightly confusing as evidenced by the cones being
run over. The first, second and third place winners were:
1. Tom Merring/Jim Brussel
2. Jim & Karen Thackeray
3. Dave & Larry Jehle.
What teamwork!!! The top prizes were gift certificates followed by a bucket
of car care products, which were sponsored by Advance Auto Parts in east Windsor.
Perhaps two more awards can be worked into the games next year. “Best Burnout”,
which would have been won by Dave Jehle in his dad Larry’s ’67 Mustang while
completing the Turn Your Partner game and “Best Locking Up The Brakes” would
have been won by Jim Thackeray in his ’64 Impala SS. Maybe a little practice
can clinch the award for you next year.
Be sure to check out the Photo Pages from the Picnic in this Newsletter, and
again, thanks to all who contributed your time to making this a fun and successful
picnic.
Remember to call the Rodeway Inn in Allentown to reserve your room for the Drive-In
Cruise. The next morning, we’ll be heading to the East Penn All Chevy Show that’s
just down the road from the Inn. Rooms are filling up quick. All information
for this event is on page seven in this newsletter.
