President’s Message
Some strange things occurred during our last meeting with the
club officer nominations. During the previous month, conversations had taken
place with Mike Berry who was seriously considering accepting the nomination
for President. Subsequently, Mike declined the nomination but then indicated
he would run for the Vice President position and therefore accepted the nomination.
Tom Merring then stepped up to accept the President nomination thereby removing
himself from the Vice President ticket. I was also nominated for the VP position.
I believe this is the first time in the 28 year history of the Jersey Late Greats
that this many members were playing “musical positions” and were contending
for the 2 top officer positions. In the end, John Lucas recapped the nominations;
President : Tom Merring
Vice President : Jim Thackeray
Mike Berry
Jim Brussel.
The other officer nominees remained as is. Good Luck to all!
If you want to witness the results of the vote, you’ll have to come to the Christmas
Buffet on December 12th.
One of our guests at the meeting, a friend of many in the club
was John Hylkema. John and Tom Merring on the day of the November club meeting,
went to look at a ’60 El Camino. John bought Happy Holidays from the Jersey
Late Greats the car on the spot. Also, this El has a couple of rather rare accessories.
Nice buy John! Hopefully Tom, as his first presidential task will be to recruit
John as the next JLG member. Another frequent guest in attendance was Tom Payne,
in from Illinois visiting Verne Frantz for the day. Tom is the owner of a few
Late Greats, so perhaps another long distance member in the making?
John Dennery had mentioned at the last meeting, that a junkyard
in Dover, PA will be closing its gates forever shortly after Thanksgiving and
if there was any club interest in visiting this yard. Over the next few days,
it became a club event as the mass email was sent to the membership indicating
such. One Vice Presidential candidate, Mike Berry volunteered to coordinate
the event and promptly contacted the local motel and the yard owner. The date
was set to Saturday, November 20th. To find out more about the Friday night/Saturday
event, please see Tom’s write-up about it in this newsletter. Thanks Mike for
coordinating the event!
There’s still time left to call Dawn Dennery about the Christmas
Buffet. She’ll be able to tell you what food or dessert would be good to bring.
Hope to see you there!
Enjoy the Rhode,
JB
