President’s Message
Well, the weather prediction for John & Dawn Dennery’s
picnic on July 10 wasn’t good but the show went on anyway. As it turned out,
just a few drops came down around 1pm and then the weather proceeded to clear
up. The band was prepared for the worst by erecting a canopy with clear plastic
sides, which ended up not being needed. You know that the weather wouldn’t have
cleared if they weren’t prepared for rain. I’m superstitious that way. After
you parked your car in the backyard, the first stop was to see Jason Dennery,
the in-house bar tender extradinaire and mixologist who was busy whipping up
killer ice-T’s. Boy Jason, I have to get that recipe from you. Great friends,
food, music and cars. What else can I say… it was the usual outstanding Dennery
party. Thanks to John & Dawn for a great party!
Summer has been here for the past month or so and if you drive your late great
like I do, air conditioning is always appreciated. But only if your cooling
system is up to the challenge. Many of us may have after-market temperature
gauges. I for one, do, which is connected in conjunction with the “idiot” light.
When the outside temperature reaches the 90’s I think many of us are constantly
eye-balling the temp gauge and when it approaches 220 degrees, think that the
engine is running too hot and therefore you turn off the airconditioning, put
the car in neutral to slightly rev the engine or do whatever else to bring the
temp down. Well, if the water pump is doing what it should, no hoses are collapsing,
the thermostat is open, you have a 50/50 mix of distilled water/anti-freeze
and the rest of the cooling system is in tip-top shape then the 220 degrees
means nothing, so just drive on. Did I say “distilled water”? I believe the
“idiot” light is designed to light when the temperature reaches 240 degrees.
Doesn’t a warmer running engine run more efficiently? As I used to be concerned
with my ’64 SS running at 220 degrees or more, a good friend once told me to
get rid of that gauge and relax, sit back and enjoy. Well, I still have the
gauge but now pay very little attention to it. Besides, isn’t it “cool” to pull
into an event with the windows closed and the A/C dripping beneath the passenger
side floorboard?
Don’t forget, the Garvey boat races are taking place in Barnegat on Aug 15th.
Please see the directions inside this newsletter. Bring your beach chairs! On
Aug 28, the club will be putting on another display of our rides at Burlington
Chevrolet from 10am – 2pm. The dealership will provide the burgers and dogs.
If you can attend, please give Al Bernotas a call.
Also, the September 12th club meeting will be held at the Bordentown Community
