April 2010
President’s Message
The Junk-Yard trip occurred this past month on March 18-19. All
eight of us, yeah, that’s right, only 8 attended, arriving late Thursday afternoon
in Culpeper, Virginia. Perhaps it was the distance because on past trips, there
were always at least 15 in attendance. We had dinner at a restaurant nearby
called Culpeper Buffalo Wild Wings. And yes, some the appetizers were extremely
hot. Friday morning, everyone convened in the parking lot and after a quick
breakfast next door to the motel, we traveled five miles to Leon’s Yard. This
yard is approximately a hundred acres large and doesn’t have the easiest terrain
to walk. It was best to follow Leon’s map of the yard which pinpointed the cars
you were interested in. This was based upon the hand-written list that was suspended
from the ceiling sandwiched in between 2 windshields and consisted of all car
makes, how many of each body style and its approximate location. He had told
us that at last count, there were slightly more than 10,000 cars in the yard,
not counting the trucks and buses that also contained hundreds of generators,
power steering pumps, air cleaners and other assorted parts. All in all, I think
everyone was happy with their parts and the price paid for them. Junk yard photos
will be in the next newsletter.
Dawn Dennery is taking orders for club tshirts and sweatshirts with the JLG
logo on them. This may be a one-time order, so if you’re interested, please
contact Dawn. There’s additional information in this newsletter.
Don’t forget, the annual JLG club picnic is scheduled for Saturday, May 8 at
the Mercer County Park. The picnic area has a covered pavilion with plenty of
tables. There’s an adjacent road where Verne Frantz conducts the car games.
Advance Auto Parts in East Windsor will be sponsoring the prizes for the games.
These are always good for a few laughs so c’mon out and join the fun. If you’re
planning on attending, please contact Mike. This will help in purchasing the
correct amount of food. The club supplies the water and soda. If there are any
other refreshments you care to bring, remember that the park does not allow
glass bottles. The picnic flyer and directions are in this newsletter. Hope
to see you there.
The April 11th meeting is our last meeting of the season, so keep checking the
newsletter for any updates on the planned summer events. We will resume our
meetings in September.
